Character Design: below is key components from our class presentation today. Sort of Character building 101.
It starts with questions....
it ends with Want, buts!
as part of our first task, we were asked to come up with want, but statements, I created two from pop-culture/existing media and one from imagination.. this brings us to our next task.
Take your imagined want, but and associate a character to it.
Below you will see my character sheet (alternative to the mind map, but has all relevant information)
after creating the character sheet and backstory, I then developed the character-map.
although this character didn't visually turn out as I planned in my head, I am happy with the progress I made despite it taking me 8 hours of the day...and perhaps a little bit more. I know speed comes with line confidence and skill so practice will definitely achieve better results (obviously).
I found a pose I liked through Pinterest and curated a mood-board to reference whilst I drew my character, I also thought about giving the character a little stylised cat but first I thought I would focus on the main character itself.
←
after sketching out the body and pose, I wanted to do the face but I had some difficulties with drawing the eyes. Liliana (in pink) came to the rescue and gave me some guidance and gave me some tips, like adding more volume to the hair so its not so flat on the sides.

VISUALISATION: This week we looked at visualisation for characters.
I realised that I didn't do enough to create Luma from last week, I sort of rushed to the final product without fully understanding him and the in-betweens.. so whilst I am still working on him, I worked a little bit backwards here.
The process in class was to find the mother shapes, create a mood-board and then silhouette the character but this process baffled me so much I went on my own mission to find a way I could get down with.
These three resources helped me understand the process of character design a little bit better, it allowed me to be more loose and free and focus less on a perfect product. Although I am still learning through this process, which I am sure, if I keep at it, I will make my own.
despite this process taking longer than I had care to admit, I was quite happy with this process and I enjoyed it a lot actually.
I also created another mood board which helped me visualise Luma better and lead to a more final design.

INTRO TO BASIC ANATOMY
for week four, we have to have a character turnaround ready for modelling, class today was intended to give us the guidelines in order to achieve that goal.
we started with our usual morning workshop.
It consisted of manipulating a wooden mannequin into a desired pose, drawing the mannequin and then lightly erasing it to draw our own character over the top.
after the warmup, we delved into a little theory of anatomy but sketched it out as we did!

This was useful, going forward to make the character turn-around I will utilise the diagram I learnt today.
to end the day, I created a bunch of different body parts and sort of Jigsaw'd them together.

CHARACTER APPEAL & DETAIL
We started with a warm-up task of choosing one of our favourite characters and analysing them to pinpoint how personality is communicated in design.
Our first workshop was to create 2 variations of our character, one with reduced detail and one with more detail.
Our second workshop was to break down the character into 5 or more shapes and then create variations of them.
Our third and final workshop was to add an extra element to the design of the character
So I added a cape.

GESTURE & MOVEMENT
Although I wasn't present much this week, I tried to fill the space by at least doing what I missed in class.
In order, we started with quick drawings of people in the university, each took one minute
In the third, we looked at line of action, using the basic humanoid characters. I created multiple poses.
The fourth image it was a basic exercise I did outside of class, again using basic shapes to create a basic humanoid character, this time I tried to draw as many as I could with poses.

COLOUR
WORKSHOP ONE
In this workshop, we focused on breaking down our character using 3/4 colours.
WORKSHOP TWO

In order... (left to right)

God this character sucks

HEAD, FACE & EXPRESSIONS
We also did some more head workshops following the Andrew Loomis Method
I need to practice this one more! I do see the value but I need to teach my brain to understand.

This was my favourite workshop of the day, and I was happy with the outcome.
